This fall, Steppingstone’s College Success Academy (CSA) began an exciting partnership with the Donald McKay School, the site for our new branch in East Boston.
We couldn’t be more thrilled to have McKay Scholars joining the Steppingstone community. Their enthusiasm and energy is infectious! Here’s a snapshot of the hard work Scholars put in after school:
2:40 p.m. – Recess / Snack
Scholars gather for recess and spend time talking to friends and teachers before their CSA classes begin. Today, the Eagles (Steppingstone’s first group of McKay Scholars) pose for a quick class photo.
3:30 p.m. – Study Hall
The class gets a head start on their assignments for school. When they have questions, they can turn to older Scholars, who volunteer as tutors. These role models help students work through complicated concepts and serve as mentors – sharing insights, advice, and guidance.
4:20 p.m. – Community Time
Ms. López leads the Steppingstone Oath and asks Scholars to explain its importance. One student says, “The Oath is about being committed to trying our best every day.” Students then publicly recognize their classmates by giving them “props” and praise for embodying this month’s theme: “Be more focused.” Katherine Moreno (left) is awarded this week’s Scholar Spotlight for her energy, focus, and engagement.
4:45 p.m. – Book Club
Ms. Weinberg leads a spirited discussion about the use of poetry in Jacqueline Woodson’s book Locomotion. Scholars annotate their books and practice citing specific evidence in the text. They continue sharing insights until 5:30, when it’s time to head home. The discussion will continue on Thursday!
